Storms
Sometimes it can feel overwhelming trying to choose what to read out of your whole big Bible. It might even be intimidating deciding how to spend your quiet time with God when there are no prompts or guidelines. That’s why we’ve asked Collide staffer, Michelle Holladay, to write this devotion to help take the guesswork out of your study time and relax into prayer and reading.
Read Mark 4:35-41
“Don’t you care what happens to me?” Have you ever said those words to God? The disciples were being obedient. It was Jesus’ idea to get in a boat and cross the lake to the other side. Yet, as they travelled, and Jesus peacefully slept, a furious storm threatened them. “Teacher,” they said, “Don’t you care if we drown?”
Sometimes, even in our obedience we will face storms and it can be confusing. We will wonder if God even cares. We will question whether or not we heard God clearly when we thought He was directing us down a particular path. We will see hardship headed our way and we will assume God is powerless to stop it, has no idea what is going on or that He has abandoned us completely.
When Jesus woke up in the boat and calmed the wind and the waves, the disciples woke up to the truth of who He really is and we need to do the same:
- God is omnipotent – He has power over all the universe and He is not subject to the same limitations we are.
- God is omniscient – He has complete knowledge of all things. Nothing surprises Him. He knows the past; He knows the present; He knows the future.
- God is omnipresent – He is all places, all the time. There is nowhere you can go where He does not exist.
Even Jesus faced storms, why do we think we will be any different? You might be doing exactly what God has called you to do and yet, disaster still seems imminent. The next time you find yourself wondering where God is in your trial, remind yourself who He really is and keep on travelling, my friend.
